About the Image Cropper
The Image Cropper lets you cut a specific region out of a PNG, JPG, or WEBP image without any desktop software. It is ideal for preparing profile pictures, thumbnails, banner images, and social media posts — all processed locally in your browser.
How the Image Cropper works
- 1
GifLab decodes the source image into a bitmap and draws it onto a canvas.
- 2
A crop rectangle defines the region to keep; pixels outside the rectangle are discarded.
- 3
The cropped region is drawn onto a new canvas sized to the crop dimensions.
- 4
The result is re-encoded to your chosen format and quality, producing a downloadable Blob.
Common use cases
- →Cutting a square profile picture from a larger photo.
- →Trimming unwanted background from a product shot.
- →Creating banner images at a fixed aspect ratio for a website or newsletter.
Tips for the best results
Common social crops: 1:1 for Instagram and avatars, 16:9 for cover images, 3:2 for photo posts.
Crop before resizing — cropping first keeps the subject sharp, then resizing down preserves that sharpness.
For thumbnails, crop to the most important area first; the resize step will handle the final small dimensions.
Image Cropper FAQ
Can I crop to a freeform shape?
Crops are always rectangular, which matches what every platform expects. Non-rectangular cut-outs are handled with transparency in PNG or WEBP.
Does cropping recompress the image?
Yes — the cropped region is re-encoded at your chosen quality. Use a high quality setting (90+) for photos to avoid visible compression artefacts.
