Our Story
GifLab was created with a simple goal: to provide fast, private, and reliable media tools without the friction of traditional desktop software or the privacy concerns of server-based converters. Most online media tools require you to upload your files to a remote server, where they are processed and sent back — meaning your personal photos, videos, and creative work sit on someone else's computer.
We built GifLab differently. Every tool — from the GIF maker to the video-to-GIF converter to the image compressor — runs entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API and modern JavaScript. When you upload a file to GifLab, it never actually goes anywhere. Your browser does all the work locally, and the result is yours to download immediately.
How It Works
When you use a GifLab tool, your browser reads the file directly from your device's storage and processes it using the Canvas API — a powerful graphics interface built into every modern web browser. For example, when you convert a video to a GIF, GifLab extracts individual frames from the video by drawing them onto a canvas element, then encodes those frames into an animated GIF file using a JavaScript-based encoder.
This approach has several advantages: it's fast (no network round-trips), it's private (your files never leave your device), and it works offline once the page is loaded. The trade-off is that very large files or long videos may take longer on older or less powerful devices — but for the vast majority of everyday media tasks, the performance is excellent.
Technology & Standards
GifLab is built with industry-standard web technologies: React for the user interface, the HTML5 Canvas API for image and video processing, and pure JavaScript for file encoding. We support the most common media formats — PNG, JPG, WEBP, and GIF for images, and MP4 and WEBM for video — covering the vast majority of files produced by phones, cameras, and design software.
We are committed to web standards and accessibility. GifLab works on any device with a modern browser — including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge — on both desktop and mobile. No plugins, extensions, or app installations are required.
